Barbs are freshwater tropical fish that originate from Asia, in particular Borneo and Sumatra. Generally Barbs are hardy and make good aquarium inhabitants especially when kept in larger schools of 5 or more. Barbs do best in a tropical aquarium of at least 50L, kept at 25-27°C, with a pH of 6.0-7.0 and KH of 5. However, will not handle a dramatic change to their environment. Many Barbs such as all the forms of Tiger Barbs can be quite aggressive especially when kept in smaller groups then 5. Because of this they should not be kept with fish such as smaller tetras, angelfish, gouramis and guppys.

Fish that coexist with Barbs in the aquarium include other species of barb, larger rasboras, corys, and other community fish that thrive in a tropical environment. Barbs are omnivores and will accept most flake foods such as Sera Vipan and pellets such as Hikari Micro Wafers, but should also have some small foods such as frozen brine shrimp or bloodworms to supplement their diet with.
